French guitarist/transcriber/TABber Jeremy Cauliez has done it again! Two new TABs in the store this week, including the much-asked-for Tocatta arrangement that I play nearly every concert.

I'm proud to be able to make these available, in both PDF, or Guitar Pro format.

I was blown away by Dolly Parton, in concert at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, February 22.

It was showbiz, glamour, lots of self-deprecating humour around her 'enhancements', perhaps a little too much 'praise the Lord', but underpinning it all, an incredibly talented singer/multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/performer.

Her voice sounded fresh and crystal clear, shut your eyes and you would swear you were listening to Dolly age 20-something, not age-68!

She's the 'real deal'.

Im looking forward to Bruce Springsteen this week!

My old early 80s Yamaha bass that I use on a lot of recording sessions had developed a strange rattle...I thought it might have been a loose truss rod, a bit of googling revealed that the problem was likely to be the machine heads. I somehow found myself on the Jenz tuners website

I was impressed by what I read, so ordered a set & installed them. They are beautifully engineered, they solved the problem!

Delivery to Brisbane from the USA took 10 days. The designer, Jim Donahue, contacted me personally to apologise for slow delivery (he had been attending the NAMM show when I placed the order), and sent me a second set, which I'll install on my old fretless bass.

Incredible product & incredible service! I highly recommend Jenz tuners.

I had a fantastic experience tutoring at the inaugural Tommy Emmanuel Guitar Camp in Collaroy this past weekend, and consequently I've had many people asking about future guitar camps.

I can confirm that I will be tutoring at two guitar camps, both coming up in the middle of next year, and both in Queensland: Mt Tambourine in June, and Maryborough in July. Dates & details are here: http://www.michaelfix.com/tours/

In the past weeks since my return, I've been in 'studio mode'....

I've just returned home from the Maleny music weekend.

And what a wonderful weekend it was.

It's the way that the celebrated Woodford folk festival started, at the Showgrounds in Maleny. A case of 'back to the future'?

I call it a 'gourmet festival'; intimate music venues, wonderful atmosphere, and delicious organic food. Many thanks to Noel Gardner and the team for making this event happen.

tantTantalise is the title of my 1991 album; the first solo guitar CD I produced.

I still have a few copies floating around, & Ive recently made it available for download on the iTunes store.

It's also on CD Baby at a special price! ;-)

Its a mixture of acoustic and electric guitar instrumentals, covers & originals. I think it represents me at that time searching for a sound & a style...

Historical, or hysterical? :-)

"...Time Lines is a testament to not only his abundance of talent, but also his ability to write and interpret music that resonates and intrigues audiences."

Parklands studio renovations are complete...a couple of pics posted here. My control room is sounding so much better; the bass & low mids are clean & tight. Feels more spacious, too. I'm looking forward to my next recording project!

Greetings & best wishes for a wonderful 2013 to you all.

In September I head off to Europe for a 6 week tour, taking in Amsterdam, Germany & Italy. (All the details are on my calendar page) Here's a summary of the dates...

I've got so many fond memories of the 1980s...for me, it was the decade I moved from my hometown Wollongong and setup up a home in Sydney. I started playing local clubs, then touring with country legend Reg Lindsay, then toured with 'The Bushwackers' before joining the band 'Hat Trick' in 1984...

Andrea & I live on radio 4BC

due to rain, we are going to be in the Princeton room, right next door to the ampitheatre...(Sunday April 29, 3pm) See link:

I'm very happy to add Shubb Capos to my family of sponsors. Shubb joins Maton Guitars, D'Addario strings, and AER amplification as another product that Im proud to use, and happy to endorse.

Im home from a remarkable 4 days at the Frankfurt Music Messe,

Hi everyone, Im back home briefly from the Tamworth Festival.

It was a wonderful week, with Tamworth celebrating 40 years of the country music festival. It was just like days of old, the town packed full of happy music fans enjoying an incredible variety of music talent in unusually mild and pleasant weather.

The awards on Saturday are the usual highlight of the week. I was up for "Instrumental of the year", but this year the coveted prize went to the Davidson Brothers, a young & talented duo who have been 'kicking goals" all year with their energetic brand of bluegrass. My congratulations go to them!

The awards concert contained a good deal of nostalgia, in keeping with the theme "Looking Forward, Looking Back", and featured some beautiful musical moments, my favorite being Graeme Connors & Aleyce Simmonds performance of "The Bondwood Boat." A stunning song.

The Golden Guitars were spread across a range of artists, making it a more interesting awards night than when one artist scoops the lot! You can see the results here Congrats to all the winners.

I presented a series of free shows this year at The Atrium, along with my friends Nadia Sunde, Paul Robert Burton, Andrew Toner, Christian Marsh, Pixie, and enjoyed the company of a number of special guest who joined me on stage: Mark Cryle, Justin McCoy, Brendan Radford, Andrew Toner, and Rose Carleo.

It was very intense week, & I'm glad to be home, albeit briefly to wrap up a recording project before heading of to New Zealand for a ten day tour.

The pic is me underneath my pole banner in Tamworth. It was strange seeing my face flapping in the breeze!

best wishes,

Michael

Here's an original song filmed in Amsterdam. The lyric is by Jeff Burton. We have been collaborating for many years, and I consider Jeff a very fine songwriter.

Its fun to perform because I do my one man band 'party trick' - playing the brush, bass, guitar, and singing.

Enjoy!

Thanks for all your support this year, I look forward to meeting you again soon; on the road, or online. Till then, my best wishes go out to you all...

Here's my take on the Christmas standard "Winter Wonderland." Written in 1934 by Felix Bernard (music) and Richard B. Smith (lyricist)

I hope you enjoy it. Merry Christmas!

Here is the 4th & final part of a short video series explaining artificial & cascading harmonics. This time, Im adding hammer-ons & pull-offs to create the harp effect. I hope you enjoyed the series! All 4 clips are in this playlist

Part 3 of 4...demonstrating how you can combine notes with harmonics to create amazing harmonies & cascading runs

Here is part 2 in a short video series where I explain and demonstrate cascading & artificial harmonics techniques on the acoustic guitar.

This is a response to one of the most asked questions at workshops.

The video was filmed during a Maton workshop in Rockhampton for Green Brothers Music, in 1997

The Eagles Hotel California (Written by Don Felder, Don Henley and Glenn Frey) was, & probably still is, one of the most popular cover songs in Australia. I think all guitar players love to have a bash at the extended end solo.

This excerpt was filmed in 1990 at the Nags Head Hotel in Sydney's inner west, where we used to play fairly regularly after our band Hat Trick decided to take an extended break. You can see the whole series from this performance here
We are both playing almost identical Maton Albert Lee country custom guitars.

I hope you are enjoying these clips, next week I'll post some guitar workshop footage that I found.

Another one filmed filmed in 1990 at the Nags Head Hotel in Sydney's inner west, where Justin & I used to play fairly regularly after our band Hat Trick decided to take an extended break.
"The William Tell overture" (Rossini) was arranged by us in the mid 80s, & was an audience favorite. I think we probably performed it over 1000 times since 1985!
We are both playing almost identical Maton Albert Lee country custom guitars. I believe only 4 guitars were ever made bearing the 'Albert Lee' name. Fine instruments, both Justin & I still have ours.

This excerpt was filmed in 1990 at the Nags Head Hotel in Sydney's inner west, where Justin McCoy & I used to play fairly regularly after our band Hat Trick decided to take an extended break. Sorry about the shirt!
"Nashville Express", written by New Zealand's Peter Posa, and was a favorite of ours.
Unfortunately the video fades just when its about to take off! We are both playing almost identical Maton Albert Lee country custom guitars.

Tommy Emmanuel introduced me to Peter Posa when we were on tour in New Zealand; a lovely man.

Another "from the vault" - Filmed in 1990 at the Nags Head Hotel in Sydney's inner west, I was just developing a solo guitar repertoire, & Duelling Banjos was one of my popular arrangements. The answer phrases are created by an echo effect. The guitar used is a Maton Albert Lee country custom (serial number 001!) which I still own, & the echo effect (at that time) was an Alesis Quadraverb. I bought that guitar in 1990 after Tommy Emmanuel connected me with Neville from Maton, who was visiting dealers around NSW to show of this new model Maton guitar. I just had to have it! I'll be posting some more clips from this pub gig which feature my duo partner Justin McCoy, also playing his brand new identical maton.

Ive found a box of VHS video tapes containing all sorts of wonderful memorablia from the 80s & 90s, which I'm in the process of converting & posting on YouTube. These clips will go into a playlist called "The Vault" & you can see the first postings here:

The Vault

Some of the footage is grainy, & the sound isn't always great, but the shirts are loud & the hairstyles sometimes dubious!

Enjoy, post comments, & I'll be encouraged to upload more.

HT picNow available - over 20 years since our last recording - a new track from Hat Trick: Restless.

Hat Trick is the band I played guitars and bass with through the 1980s. A popular group in an around Sydney, we played six shows per week over many years (in the week of the bi-centenery celebrations, we played 23 concerts!). We were, and still are, best friends who still share incredible joy through music.

Restless is a track I composed in 1995 for the album The Heart has Reasons, and revisited earlier this year as a contender for the Two Timing project. As soon as we got together in the studio, it was obvious that the old magic was there. The track is a 'classic' Hat Trick sound; lead guitar & violins over a rock shuffle. Its now available to purchase (download only) for the princey sum of AU$1.69

Here's a "from the couch" performance of a beautiful Nat King Cole song "When I fall in love". Cole has a voice that conjures up a late night dessert made up of honey & cointreau being slowly poured over melted dark chocolate.

I've always loved this song, & the sentiment of the lyric. I recorded this track early in 2011 as a duet with Louie Shelton for my 'Two Timing' CD. If you don't know Louie, he is the guitar on the early Jackson 5, Monkees ("last train to Clarkesville" anyone?) Boz Skaggs and Lionel Richie (hello...?) - to name but a few.

Next time Louie drops in, I'll sit him on the couch & film him. meanwhile, here is my solo version...

Ive taken delivery of a new Roland GR55 guitar synth. I already have a Line6 Variax guitar fitted with a GK3 pickup, & Ive been giving the unit a workout this morning. I think its going to be a really nice addition to the studio. Anyone want to buy a GR33 ?

Recently, I arranged a couple of Shadows tunes for a festival in Verden (Germany) - a celebration of music by Cliff Richard & The Shadows.

I'm a few years too young to have caught The Shadows on their wave of success, but their music is required listening for any guitar player. The early 60s was an incredible time for instrumental guitar music...The Shadows, The Ventures, Atlantics, Duane Eddy, Dick Dale, Chantays...all riding the the top of the pop charts.

"Foot Tapper" is a challenging piece to play, but it's a fun tune, and Ive been including it in my concert set since October. I've discovered that many younger people (who don't know the original version) like this tune!

This clip was filmed by Ulrich Erbach at the Wurghaus in Wulfrath, Germany, October 2011.

Join my email news list,& you'll receive a free download link to the track Light at the end of the tunnel. This track was the winner of "best Instrumental" award at the 2010 Queensland CM awards, and is not available on any of my albums.

Just head over to: michaelfix.com and add your email address to the list to receive your free gift!

Thank you to friends in Germany, Holland, Italy & Luxembourg who came to concerts, yelled for more, bought CDs...it was a wonderful tour, & the shows playing with Adam Rafferty were a special treat. Planning is already well underway for 2012. I sense a growing interest in 'hand-made music'. Now, if I can just shake this jet-lag....

We have a series of trio shows this weekend, where we'll feature a swag of new material.

Dropping in to the Qld state library today to hear (meet?) Anna Funda, author of 'Stasiland'.

Here's Rose Carleo & Michael Fix performing the old Etta James classic 'At Last'

I went along to the inaugural Queensland music awards. On the whole, it was pretty well done. Nice to see support for our local music industry. Interested to hear comments from others who attended.

Each Tuesday, Rose Carleo posts a new video which features Rose & I performing an old favourite song. This week, its the Cold Chisel classic "Flame Trees"

Filmed in HD by Darren Scott

This is a great tune to play.

"Baby Elephant Walk" & "Theme from Peter Gunn" - so different, yet so similar, don't you think?

Its been a fantastic month for me, Ive been overwhelmed with positive reviews of the new Two Timing CD, I've had some wonderful shows, and then, to cap it al off, I was voted into the "Top 25 Australian Guitarists" by readers of Guitarist Australia Magazine. That floored me!

Its been a busy week of record company admin. When you're an indie artist, you've gotta be versatile. In between playing at festivals (National & Wintermoon) copies of "Two Timing" have gone out to radio stations across the land, & to magazines across the globe. Its been a week of press releases, databases & spreadsheets.

My CD is in stock (ie taking up space in the garage) and ready to order!

The album will be in stores in Australia from May 6 (distribution by WJO,) but if you can't wait till then, click 'store' to order directly using Credit Card or PayPal (secure checkout).

Want to have a listen? There are previews: just click 'music'.

Had the gorgeous Sara Storer in the studio yesterday - we are tracking a duet with Graham Rodger for his new album. I went to Sara's concert last night, she (& her brother Greg) are incredible songwriters, & she has one of the sweetest voices around.

It's been a wait (parcel from Germany went astray), but I finally have copies available of the DVD/songbook "Play like Michael Fix". Filming took place in Germany, October 2010, and is in English, as well as German. I perfom/analyse/de-construct 2 of my pieces Two left feet and Stringin' the blues. Shot with 3 cameras, all angles are covered, lots of detailed explanation, and additional exercises are included. Price AU$30.00 + post.

Visit the store at www.michaelfix.com to order your copy today!

The complete Noted! songbook, plus individual titles are now available to download. A$20.00 for the book, A$2.50 for the single tracks. Secure payment with PayPal. Features notation+TAB & performance notes. Just click 'store'

Been back a couple of weeks from Europe tour, busy in the studio completing an album for 'The Leaping Lizards', & working on my own CD.

I'm nearly packed & ready to leave for Germany, & still a couple of last minute additions to the itinerary are coming in. Please swing by the 'calendar' page for the full itinerary.

In an effort to clear some space in my warehouse (ie garage) I've dropped the prices of CDs: from $25.00 to $19.95. Includes the '2for1' Transfixed + Web of Dreams deal !

sorry, can't think of anything else to mention.

New videos posted: "The Dancer" "Light at the end of the tunnel" & "Promise"

I'm very excited about a series of concerts starting this week with multi-instrumentalist Paul Burton.

Way back in the '90s, Paul & I toured together as part of Graeme Connors' touring band, & we've remained friends ever since.

Paul has a duo partner - Andrew Toner - a fantastic young guitar player.
We are planning an action-packed show combining great entertainment, variety, and musical virtuosity!

Im getting ready for a weekend in the sunny north at the Charters Towers Country Music festival, where they are holding the inaugural Qld CM awards. I am a finalist in the Instrumental category with Light at the end of the Tunnel.

Late in 2009 I filmed a guitar workshop DVD for German label Fingerprint. Entitled Play like Michael Fix, it's available now, & I'm really pleased with it. The package looks great & the transcriptions are superb. I congratulate producer Peter Finger & crew for a wonderful result. You can check it out here

Just a week before I leave for Europe. Im a guest of Maton guitars & imusic network at the Frankfurt musicmesse, Europes largest music trade show. Prior to the messe, I'll be travelling through Germany presenting in-store demos & workshops at selected dealers.

I've been having a wonderful time being the Musical Director for the stage show "Nadia's Wish". Every day has new surprises, & I couldn't wish for a more pleasant bunch of people to work with.

Here's a link: Nadia's Wish

final rehearsals on Monday for Nadia's Wish, a wonderful family show playing at the SLQ theatre, Southbank, starting January 5. I'm Musical Director & am enjoying playing Sebastion, a banjo/mandolin/guitar playing Frenchman.

I'd like to thank you, and wish you all a very happy Christmas, so I have posted a video Christmas message to you all.
